Why Pavers Sink and How to Fix Them

Outdoor Living · Oct 29, 2026 · 2 min read

Pavers sink when what’s under them moves. The usual causes are a base that was too thin or not compacted, water running under the patio and washing out the bedding, a missing or loose edge restraint, or soil that settled over an old trench. The fix is to lift the pavers in that area, correct the base and the water, compact it, and relay the same pavers.

The base was too thin or not compacted

A paver patio is only as level as the crushed-stone base under it. If the base was thin, the wrong material, or not compacted in layers, it keeps settling under foot traffic and furniture. This is the most common cause, and it usually shows up within the first few years.

Water is getting underneath

A downspout emptying at the patio edge, a patio pitched toward the house, or runoff from a slope above can carry the fine bedding layer out from under the pavers. Low spots then hold water, which makes it worse. Fixing the water is part of fixing the patio, or the dip comes back. See water pooling by your foundation.

The edge is moving

Without a solid edge restraint, the outer row of pavers slowly drifts outward, joints open up, and the border sinks or spreads. A failing edge often starts at corners and along the lawn side.

Something underneath settled

Soil that was dug out and refilled, such as over a utility line, an irrigation trench or the backfill around a newer foundation, can keep settling for years. A patio built over it dips in a line or a patch that follows the trench.

How a sunken section gets fixed

  1. Lift the pavers in the affected area and a little beyond it.
  2. Find and fix the cause: rebuild and compact the base, redirect the water, or replace the edge restraint.
  3. Relay the same pavers, refill the joints and compact the surface.

Because pavers come up and go back down, a repair usually matches the rest of the patio. When RK builds a paver patio, it goes on an excavated, compacted crushed-stone base, pitched away from the house, with an edge restraint around the border.

Questions homeowners ask

Can I just add sand under a sunken paver?

It may level it for a while, but if the base or the water caused it, the dip comes back.

Is a sunken patio a safety problem?

Uneven pavers can be a tripping hazard, especially on steps and walkways, so it’s worth fixing early.
