Water pools next to a house for three common reasons: downspouts empty right at the foundation, the yard slopes toward the house instead of away from it, or soil around a newer home has settled into a low spot. The fixes are buried downspout extensions, regrading so the ground falls away from the house, and French drains or dry creek beds where water needs a path. Red clay barely absorbs water, so it has to be moved, not left to soak in.
Start with the downspouts
Most pooling starts at the gutters. A downspout that empties onto grass or into a bed puts a roof’s worth of rain in one spot. A buried downspout extension carries that water under the lawn to a pop-up emitter, well away from the house. It’s often the simplest fix.
Check the slope
The ground around a house should fall away from it. Over time, settling, beds built up against the wall, or a patio pitched the wrong way can reverse that. Regrading reshapes the soil so water runs off instead of toward the foundation.
Give the water a path
When water crosses the yard or collects along an edge, it needs somewhere to go. A French drain is perforated pipe in a gravel-filled trench that carries water to a set spot; RK crews often use laser-guided equipment to hold the grade along the run. A dry creek bed does the same with rock and boulders and looks like a natural creek.
What you see and what usually fixes it
| What you see | Usual fix |
|---|---|
| Puddles where a downspout empties | Buried downspout extension with a pop-up emitter |
| Water sitting against the wall after storms | Regrading away from the house |
| A wet strip along a fence or bed edge | French drain |
| Runoff cutting down a slope | Dry creek bed |
| Mulch washing onto walks | Regrading, edging or a drain |
What we don’t do
RK fixes how water moves across the yard and away from the house. If water is already getting into the basement or crawlspace, call a foundation waterproofing company as well; that’s a different trade. See yard drainage for how we work.
Questions homeowners ask
Do you need to see it raining?
No, but photos or a short video from a storm help show where the water goes.
Does a drainage fix need a design?
Usually not. Drainage jobs get a direct quote after Rob sees the yard.
