Landscape design & planting

Landscape design and planting, drawn in 3D first

Our design team draws your whole yard in a 2D plan and a 3D rendering, then we plant it in layers that look right in every season.

What do you want built?

Book your site visit in about a minute.

RK Preferred’s design team draws your whole yard as a 2D plan and a 3D rendering before anything is built, then our crews plant and build it. There’s no charge for the site visit with Rob; the design is a paid step, and every dollar is credited toward your build on projects of $10,000 and up.

Most backyards get built one piece at a time: a patio one year, a wall the next, plants when someone remembers. A design draws the terrace, walls, kitchen, planting, lighting and drainage together before anything is dug. Rob presents it, and we revise it with you until it’s right. The design is a paid step, and every dollar is credited toward your build on projects of $10,000 and up.

Good planting is mostly editing. We take out what’s overgrown or dying, set new bed lines with edging, and plant in layers: trees for height, evergreen shrubs for structure, and perennials and grasses for the seasons. Sod, mulch and pine straw finish it.

How design works

Rob, our project consultant, walks the property with you, looks at the grade, the drainage and your style, and gives you a ballpark. If it’s a fit, design starts that day.

Our design team builds the 2D plan and 3D rendering. Rob presents it, and we revise it with you until it’s right. Then you get the final proposal.

Planting

We plant deciduous shade trees, evergreens, shrubs, perennials and flowers, chosen for the soil, the sun and shade, and how much moisture the spot holds. Red clay, hot summers and cold snaps narrow the list, so plant choice is part of the design.

Bed renovations, sod and ground cover

Older yards often need a tear-out first: removing overgrown beds and tired lawn, regrading for drainage, then planting, edging and new sod.

Sod goes down on graded, conditioned topsoil, laid tight and staggered, with watering instructions for the first weeks. Beds are finished with wood mulch, pine straw or decorative rock such as river rock, with block or steel edging.

Very happy with the work from RK Landscaping. Met with Rob for the initial consultation. Our desires for what we wanted were reflected in the design. Rob and the team were able to fill in some gaps where our knowledge ran short. Re-design phase was seamless and quick. We had constant communication on when the project would start (a few delays due to unpredictable weather). Once the project started, the schedule was spot on. Shoutout to Pablo, Marlon, Hardy (hopefully those are the right names). They were kind, worked hard, communicated well, and cleaned up everyday. We have plans to do more work with RK in the future and will be our go-to for landscaping needs.

What drew me to RK Preferred Landscaping on FB was that the company provided a rendering of the project BEFORE any work was even done! In this climate where vendors are overpromising and underperforming, this was a great benefit to offer and set RK apart from the competition. Rob came out to my home for a consultation, took pics, and provided an estimate. Once I decided to move forward, he and Francesca have consistently stayed in great communication with me throughout the entire process, always keeping me updated of changes, deadlines, schedules, etc. Again, because the rendering had been already designed beforehand, the installation was seamless and lasted only a few days. Headed up by Project Manager, Hardy, the entire crew (including Marlon and Antonio) was friendly, on-time, hardworking, and cleaned up every day. Overall, a great experience! Definitely worth the investment. Now if I only can grow a green thumb and keep these plants alive....LOL

From start to finish we have such great things to say about the team at RK Preferred Landscaping. Rob did a fantastic job making our vision of a serene backyard landscape come to life. We had the best communication with Rob, Francesca, and our amazing project manager, Hardy. Once work date was scheduled Hardy was our point of contact and kept us updated on every phase of the project. The most hardworking meticulous guys, Paulo and Marlon took Rob’s plans and made them come to life for us. In less than 3 days we have our little slice of heaven! I highly recommend the entire team at RK Preferred Landscaping! They are A+++ (Before and after photos are included in this review)

Our yard needed help - The lawn had been neglected and the previous homeowners had attempted a "DIY" landscaping project, with a mix of all kinds of random plants, many of which were too large for the spaces where they'd been planted, many others that were dying because they'd been improperly planted, etcetera. We wanted to start over, with a cohesive, deliberate design, and had ideas that we wanted to incorporate in the project. Rob listened to what we wanted and came up with a beautiful design that incorporated what we were looking for, within the budget we'd established. He and his employees were friendly, professional, and punctual. Our grass looks great now, and we are so happy with our beautiful new yard!

Landscape design & planting questions

Is there a charge for the design?

There’s no charge for the site visit. The design is a paid step, and every dollar is credited toward your build on projects of $10,000 and up.

Do I have to build everything at once?

No. Many clients build in phases. Drawing the whole yard first means phase one doesn’t block phase two.

When is the best time to plant?

Fall is ideal for trees and shrubs around Charlotte. Many plants can go in most of the year with proper watering.

Do small jobs need a design?

No. Smaller jobs like drainage, sod and cleanups skip the design and get a direct quote.

Mulch, pine straw or rock?

Mulch and pine straw hold moisture and suppress weeds and need refreshing. Rock lasts and makes leaf cleanup easier under big trees.
