RK Preferred builds paver patios, walkways and steps in Matthews, and many of them replace a cracked concrete slab or an older patio that has settled. Matthews homes are established, the yards have mature trees, and the patio is often the last part of the house that hasn’t been updated.
Slab-to-paver replacements
A common Matthews project is taking out an old concrete slab and building a larger paver terrace in its place. The old slab is removed, the area is excavated, and a compacted crushed-stone base goes in, pitched so water runs away from the house. Then the pavers are laid, with an edge restraint to keep the border tight.
Pavers handle Charlotte-area clay better than a slab because the joints let the surface move without cracking, and a section can be lifted and relaid later. See pavers vs. a concrete patio.
Working around mature trees
Big trees are one of the best things about older Matthews lots, and they need care during a patio project. Roots near the surface affect where the patio edge can go, heavy equipment stays off the root zone where possible, and the design can use a tree as the focal point of the terrace, then light it at night.
Pavers we install
Most of our patios are Unilock: Beacon Hill Smooth for a clean, large-format terrace, Treo for smaller modern units, and Copthorne for walkways and borders with an old-world look that suits many older homes. We also install Techo-Bloc and Belgard pavers, and travertine.
Front walks and entries
Matthews projects often include the front of the house too. Replacing a narrow concrete walk with a wider paver walkway, in Copthorne or Treo, updates an older home’s entry and ties the front yard to the new backyard terrace.
Older lots and drainage
Older yards often hide drainage problems: downspouts that empty at the old slab, or a yard that has settled toward the house. A new patio would make those worse, so we look at where the water goes before anything is built, and fix it as part of the project. See yard drainage.
Questions homeowners ask
Can you make my patio bigger than the old slab?
Usually, yes. The new terrace is designed around how you use the yard, not the old footprint.
Can you add steps or a seat wall?
Yes. Steps down to the lawn and seat walls are planned with the patio so the levels line up.
Is Matthews in your service area?
Yes. Matthews is in Mecklenburg County, about 4 miles from our Indian Trail yard.
