RK Preferred designs and builds outdoor kitchens for homes in Ballantyne and South Charlotte, where backyards are often smaller and every square foot has to work. On a tighter lot, the design decides where the kitchen goes so the smoke doesn’t drift into the neighbor’s yard, the cook isn’t facing the afternoon sun, and there’s still room to sit.
Designing a kitchen for a small yard
A compact grill island with counter space on both sides often does more than a long kitchen that crowds the patio. Bar seating along the island lets guests talk to the cook without taking up the terrace. The 2D plan and 3D rendering show how the kitchen, seating and any planting fit before construction starts.
Privacy and smoke
Neighbors are closer here, so placement matters. We look at the prevailing breeze, sight lines from next door and windows nearby. A pergola over the kitchen or dining area adds shade and some privacy, and planting along the fence line softens it.
What a compact kitchen can include
- A grill island with storage below
- A small sink, a mini fridge or both
- Bar seating along the island
- Gas, power and water runs planned in the design
- Downlights over the counter for evening cooking
Materials and finish
On a small patio, the kitchen is close to the house and part of every view from inside, so materials matter. Stone, stacked-stone and masonry finishes are matched to the patio pavers and any seat walls, so the kitchen looks built in. Unilock Beacon Hill Smooth or Treo pavers suit the clean lines of many South Charlotte homes.
Evenings outside
Downlights over the counter make evening cooking practical, and low step and path lights keep the patio safe without lighting up the neighbor’s yard.
HOAs
Most neighborhoods here have an HOA. Your 2D plan and 3D rendering show the kitchen’s size, height and materials, which is what a review usually asks to see. Rules vary by neighborhood.
Questions homeowners ask
Is my yard big enough for an outdoor kitchen?
Usually, if the kitchen is sized to the space. A compact grill island fits on many smaller patios.
Can the kitchen go on my existing patio?
Sometimes. A masonry kitchen is heavy, so we check the base first.
Can a kitchen and a fire pit both fit?
Often, on a well-planned patio: a compact grill island along one side and a small fire table or fire pit at the other end, with the seating between them. The 3D rendering shows whether both fit comfortably.
