Fall is the best time to plant trees and shrubs around Charlotte: the soil is still warm enough for roots to grow while cooler air puts less stress on the leaves, so plants establish before summer heat. Spring planting works with steady watering. Warm-season sod like Bermuda establishes best from late spring through summer, while tall fescue lawns are best seeded in early fall.
Trees and shrubs
Plants set in fall spend the winter growing roots and meet their first summer already established. Spring planting is fine, but those plants face July heat with smaller root systems, so they need more consistent watering. Summer planting is the hardest on new plants.
Perennials and grasses
Spring and fall both work for perennials and ornamental grasses. Fall planting gives a fuller first spring; spring planting lets you see the garden fill in the same season.
Lawns
Lawn timing depends on the grass. Bermuda and other warm-season grasses grow fastest in heat, so sod roots in quickly from late spring through summer. Tall fescue is a cool-season grass, and early fall is the time to seed or overseed it, which is why RK’s 12-month program does aeration and overseeding in fall.

Planting with a bigger project
When a project includes a patio, walls or grading, the hardscape goes in first and planting comes last, so equipment doesn’t damage new beds. A fall finish lines up the planting with the best season. Our landscape design work plans both together.
Questions homeowners ask
Is it too late to plant in November?
Usually not around Charlotte. Trees and shrubs can go in through late fall while the ground isn’t frozen.
How often should new sod be watered?
Often at first, then less as it roots. See the watering schedule for new sod.
